Cultural Competence
The ability to interact effectively with
people of different cultures. The genuine
sensitivity and respect given to people
regardless of differences.
A developmental process that evolves over
an extended period of time. Individuals,
organizations and systems are at various
levels of awareness, knowledge and skills
along the cultural competence continuum.
Individuals: The state of being capable of
functioning effectively in the context of
cultural differences.
Organizations and Systems: Acknowledge
and incorporate at all levels the importance
of culture, the assessment of cross cultural
relations, vigilance towards the dynamics
that results from cultural differences and the
expansion of cultural knowledge and the
adaptation of services to meet culturally
unique needs.
